Many churches pass around a collection plate partway through the service as a way of amassing funds that they can use for various purposes within the church and in the community that it serves. When you attend the church, you're under no obligation to place any money in the plate. However, you'll notice that many people place cash in the plate, either inside of an envelope or on its own, so you might want to do the same.
